A Podcast to get you started in Stand Up Comedy

I run and produce weekly Stand Up Comedy shows in downtown Chandler, AZ. Thursday is open mic night. No one is invited to perform. Every one is welcome No one is invited. That way no one can blame the club when the jokes aren’t funny.

I get asked every week, “Can I get on a weekend show?”

To which I normally reply, “You can get on a weekend show when you’re funny.”

Sometimes, I never see those people again, which I find really funny. Sometimes they just keep coming back until they’re finally funny or quit trying.

My favorite thing is when people come back after 6 months and they are actually funny, but that almost never happens.

The real answer to the question, “How do I get booked when I’m starting out in Stand Up Comedy?”

You need to have 5 minute of funny material that consistently gets laughs. It’s that simple.

I book one of the few B comedy stages in all of Phoenix. We have a lot of repeat regular visitors. So I’m always looking and excited to get new faces and voices on my shows. My only stipulation is that those faces and voices are funny!

Over the years I’ve sat through hundreds of hours of bad comedy. No one likes bad comedy. You know why?

It’s because time slows down when you’re watching a train wreck. So when you do the “feels like” math, the hundreds of hours I’ve sat through over the years has felt like 10,000 hours. I feel like an expert is what I’m saying.

I noticed something after sitting through the longest hours of my life.

People who are new at Stand Up Comedy are always bad. They are always bad in the same ways.

I came up with a system to fix the problems everyone has when they are getting started as a Stand Up. My approach has proven to help new comics get funny faster.
